Making the switch.

Like many of us, I shop at Walmart.


It's cheaper, it's got a big selection and you can get your photos printed. Unfortunately, depending where you live, it's also a depressing place to go into. The one where we live is always crowded and the employees look (to me, anyway) dejected. I will also add, although it's horrible to say, that all elements of society go there, and, well, hmmph. Not going to proceed with that statement; it's too uppity:) Maybe it's just our city; in Missouri the local Walmart was a lovely place to go, the employees were bright and friendly, the place was clean and didn't make me cringe.

Anyway, we do have another option in Albertson's, another grocery store chain. The prices are higher and they don't have as broad a selection but it's clean, well-staffed and the lines are never longer than three-deep. It's pleasant to be in the store and the people that shop there are mostly retirees and the younger professional set (that sounds incredibly snobbish but it is a factor for me). I haven't shopped there, however, because of the prices. You just can't beat Walmart.

The past two weeks, though, I've found myself going to Albertson's, and I've discovered that it you shop the sales it evens out the higher prices. It's not just the over processed stuff that goes on sale; organic items go on sale as well. The fruit and vegetables look happier than they do at Walmart, like they're full of vitamins and minerals. So I think I've made the switch; it means that I can't really plan meals, because I have to buy what's on sale, but that fits our lifestyle right now. It's such a pleasant feeling, knowing that I don't have to go to Walmart. Now I'm just hoping that one day I'll live within range of an HEB (greatest grocery store in Texas). Seriously, I know people who would willingly drive a couple hours to get to one.

Note: While I was writing this we were watching Homeward Bound and I cried. I don't remember that movie being such a tear-jerker:)

I know you might be thinking of a Wal-Mart further North, but I also miss the Wal-Mart in Missouri. The Wal-Mart I go to here isn't so bad as far as people and staff go, and its pretty clean, but it is typically pretty crowded and the lines are almost always long--they often have only a few registers open and close self-checkout at times that seem arbitrary to me, all of which drives me crazy.

Someday my wife and I will get into couponing and make a switch from Wal-Mart, in the meantime we mix and match our grocery stores.

I actually was thinking of the one in Missouri, it was so nice. And I can't stand couponing, although I know people who like to do it. The coupons usually seem to be for over processed stuff that I cannot in good conscience buy, so I gave it up:)

You know... there's a reason for the whole "people of Walmart" song. I would be willing to be that the Walmarts you know to be nice are the exception rather than the rule. I'm just saying.

Sub-Teach, On monday, I had about 80% of this written as a reply to your comment before I figured I should just drop it into a post. Yay for thought spam from simple commentary. To be clear: I'm not anti-our-current-president. I didn't like his solution for the recession(the bailout(which was started by our previous president)) but I'm certainly not blaming the recession on him. I understand that it was my dear party that thought you could spend AND cut taxes at the same time. I'm not really in favor of the way in which the other party wants to extend the tax cuts(cutting some and not others). I would rather we let all of the tax cuts expire and everyone equally paid a little bit more. BUT I'm really not happy with the idea that we can extend all of them when we are in record levels of national debt, which is what my party espouses. No our current president didn't have much time to fix the economy...and any good/harm he did probably won't be evident

So Beowulfa recieved the Burning Crusade as one of her many christmas presents. As a side note, she also recieved a picture of a chick with a pet lion. Sort of like Angharad. Anyways, we're poking Drenai characters in a "ooo that would be cool" kind of way. Since it was her birthday present and all... and if the characters were not BElf or Spacegoat then it wouldn't be using the present! So we're going to at least get them to 10. And BElf's are too... pretty in an ugly way. I don'ts like them. She doesn't like them(much?). I said Spacegoat. She quickly created a male drenai priest(this morning). We talked about it at lunch and she's going to make a paladin instead, I think. I slightly warned her off of priest because I've heard they solo about as well as a warrior heals. I'm.... undecided. We have warrior, paladin, mage, priest, shaman, hunter. I've been told I need to be something tankish. So mage and priest are gone. I'm definin
